What it is and how it works in the body
Skin sits on top of a layer of connective tissue that surgeons tighten during a facelift. Focused ultrasound is an attempt to reach that same layer from the outside. The device concentrates sound energy at a set depth beneath the surface, where it converts to heat in small, precise points. Nothing is cut and the surface is left intact. The energy passes through the top layers and deposits below them. Those heated points are a controlled injury, and the body responds the way it responds to injury anywhere: it repairs. That repair involves laying down new collagen over a period of months. The result, when it comes, is not the device tightening your face on the day. It is your own tissue remodelling afterwards. This is why the timeline for this category of treatment is measured in months rather than days, and why it behaves so differently from a filler, which occupies space the moment it is placed.
How a session generally goes
The face is cleaned and mapped, ultrasound gel is applied, and the handpiece is moved across the treatment area in passes. Most people describe the sensation as heat with intermittent prickling that follows the passes rather than being constant, more noticeable over bone, such as along the jaw, than over softer areas. It is a sensation people generally tolerate without sedation, though comfort varies and that is worth discussing honestly at the consultation rather than discovering on the table. You walk out afterwards; there is no dressing and nothing to cover. Some redness or a warm feeling in the treated area is common and settles on its own. Exactly how long the appointment runs depends on how much area is treated.
How it differs from the other treatments here
It is easy to confuse this with three other things we offer, and they are not interchangeable. Dermal fillers add volume where volume was lost. They work by occupying space, and you see the change immediately. Sculptra stimulates collagen too, but chemically and from the inside, injected into the tissue. Focused ultrasound stimulates from the outside using energy rather than a substance, and nothing is left behind in the tissue. Microneedling works on skin quality and texture in the upper layers, not on the deep support layer. A face that has lost volume will not be corrected by tightening alone, and skin that has lost firmness will not be corrected by adding volume alone. Which of these, or which combination, actually fits your face is the substance of the consultation, and anyone who tells you the answer before looking at you is selling, not assessing.
Common myths
That it replaces a facelift. It does not, and the honest framing is that it belongs to a different category with a different ceiling. A surgeon repositions tissue, this asks tissue to remodel itself. That it works for everyone equally. It does not; response varies with skin, tissue and the degree of laxity, which is exactly why assessment comes before booking. That the result appears immediately. Any visible change on the day is swelling, not the outcome. That more energy means a better result. It does not work that way, and treating aggressively is how complications happen rather than how results improve.
