What it is & how it works
Glutathione is an antioxidant the body makes on its own. It is widely marketed by infusion, most often for skin lightening, and that use is the one with the clearest safety signal against it. This page exists to give you the picture before you decide anything.
What glutathione is
Glutathione is a small molecule made of three amino acids, produced by your own cells. Inside the body it functions as an antioxidant and takes part in how cells handle oxidative stress and process certain substances. That role is well described and not in dispute. What is in dispute, and it is a serious dispute, is whether putting it into a vein produces any of the outcomes it is sold for. Those are two very different questions, and clinics that market this treatment routinely blur them, describing the biology as though it demonstrated the benefit.
The skin lightening question, stated plainly
The most common reason this is sold is skin lightening. On that specific use, the position is not ambiguous: there are no published clinical trials evaluating injectable glutathione for skin lightening, the FDA has not approved any injectable product for skin lightening, and dermatology associations internationally advise against the cosmetic use. Reported concerns include serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, along with effects on the liver, kidneys and nervous system, and, where preparation or sourcing is poor, the risks that come with any injected product made outside proper controls. A federal court has ordered a company selling injectable skin whitening products to halt sales and recall them. If someone offers you this for lightening and does not mention any of the above, that omission is itself information about them.
What about the antioxidant framing
Some clinics, aware of the above, reposition the same infusion as an antioxidant or wellness treatment rather than a lightening one. It is worth knowing that this does not change the regulatory picture: there is no FDA approval for that use either, and the warning letters the FDA has sent to wellness clinics were precisely about advertising IV glutathione as a cosmetic treatment. Changing the words on the page does not change what is in the bag. We would rather tell you that than perform the same repositioning ourselves.
If your goal is more even skin tone
Uneven tone, sun damage and pigmentation are common, treatable concerns, and there are approaches with an established basis, topical regimens, sun protection, and in-office treatments that work on the skin directly rather than systemically. Which route makes sense depends on what is actually causing the pigmentation you are seeing, which is an assessment, not a purchase. Bring it to a consultation and ask what the realistic ceiling is for your skin.
Regulatory status
Injectable glutathione is not approved by the FDA for any indication, not for skin lightening, not for detoxification, not for anti-ageing. There are no published clinical trials evaluating injectable glutathione for skin lightening, and the FDA has issued warning letters to clinics that advertised it as a cosmetic treatment. Reported risks include serious skin reactions, and liver, kidney and nervous system effects. We are showing you this because you should have it before a consultation, not after.
