What it is & how it works

The nasolabial folds, the diagonal creases that run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth, are the 'parentheses' most people call smile lines. Hyaluronic acid can soften them, but the useful insight is that the fold is often a consequence, not the cause: it deepens because the cheek above it has lost volume and dropped, and the fold is the visible edge of that descent. That is why treating the fold directly is sometimes the wrong move, and why an honest plan may point upward, to the cheek, instead of into the crease itself.

What it does for you

  • Softens the deep diagonal crease
  • Often better treated at the cheek above it
  • Immediate and reversible

Where the fold comes from

The nasolabial fold marks the boundary between the mobile cheek and the upper lip, so everyone has some crease there. It is normal anatomy, not a flaw. It deepens over time for a structural reason: the volume that used to sit high on the cheek deflates and slides downward, and as the cheek drops it presses that boundary into a deeper groove. Repeated smiling etches it further. This is the key fact that separates it from the fine lines around the lips: the nasolabial fold is a deep, largely static crease driven by descending midface volume, not a surface-quality problem, which is why the treatment is about restoring support and volume rather than resurfacing skin.

How it differs from the fine lines above the lip

These two are constantly confused because both sit around the mouth, but they are opposite problems. The nasolabial fold is a single deep crease running diagonally from nose to mouth corner, driven by volume loss. It is treated by rebuilding support with a firmer filler, or by lifting the cheek above it. The lines above the upper lip are a different thing entirely: fine, vertical, multiple, running perpendicular to the lip like a barcode, driven by lip movement, thin skin and sun rather than by descending volume. Putting a volumising filler into those fine vertical lines the way you would into a nasolabial fold would look wrong. Different direction, different depth, different cause, different treatment.

Sessions, timeline and how long it lasts

Because this uses hyaluronic acid, the softening is visible the same day, with the final result settling over about two weeks as any swelling resolves. It is priced per syringe because how much is needed depends on how deep the fold is and whether the cheek is being addressed too. The area sees moderate movement from smiling and eating, so it does not last quite as long as a very still spot like the chin, commonly somewhere in the range of nine to eighteen months before a top-up is considered. Most people are treated in a single visit, though when the real plan is to support the cheek, that may be staged with a review in between.

Who is a good candidate: and who is not

Someone with a moderate nasolabial fold from midface volume loss is a strong candidate, especially when a little cheek support is part of the plan. The treatment softens a fold; it does not stop a face from ageing, and chasing the crease down to nothing usually looks overfilled and unnatural. Some softening, not erasure, is the honest target. Where the deeper issue is loose, sagging skin rather than a defined fold, filler is the wrong tool and a skin-tightening or surgical conversation is the honest one. The usual filler cautions apply: avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and with an active infection at the site, with a history of cold sores near the mouth worth mentioning. Whether to treat the fold, the cheek, or both is exactly what the assessment decides.

The session, recovery and reversibility

Treatment is quick, with numbing for comfort, and recovery is light, some swelling and the chance of a small bruise for a few days, settling as the result refines over about two weeks. As with all hyaluronic acid, it is reversible: if the correction looks heavy or sits unevenly, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase and the area returns to how it was. That reversibility is reassuring in an expressive part of the face, and it is a real reason to prefer hyaluronic acid over any permanent option here. Simple aftercare, avoiding heavy exercise, heat and a lot of facial movement for a day or so, helps the filler settle where it was placed.

Nasolabial fold filler in Pompano Beach: often not where you think

Filler for the nasolabial fold in Pompano Beach frequently ends up placed above the fold rather than in it, because the groove deepens when the cheek over it loses support. The consultation is where that call gets made, and it is the reason this is booked as an assessment first. From Coconut Creek the drive is twelve to eighteen minutes, from Lighthouse Point a few, and the appointment runs thirty minutes once the plan is agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Why would you treat my cheeks if the line is by my mouth?

Because the fold is often the consequence, not the cause. It deepens when the cheek above it loses volume and drops. Restoring support higher up can soften the fold more naturally than filling the groove directly. Whether that applies to you is decided in person; sometimes the honest answer is to treat the fold itself.

Is this the same as treating the lines above my lip?

No, they are opposite problems. The nasolabial fold is a single deep crease running diagonally from nose to mouth corner, driven by volume loss. The lines above the lip are fine, vertical and multiple, driven by movement and skin quality. Different direction, depth, cause and treatment. They are sometimes treated in the same visit, but they are not the same thing.

Will it look overfilled?

The overfilled look usually comes from chasing the crease down to nothing. Some softening, not erasure, is the natural-looking target, and working with the proportion of the whole midface, rather than just packing the groove, is what keeps it subtle. That judgement is exactly what the assessment is for.

How long does it last?

The area moves moderately with smiling and eating, so it does not last as long as a very still spot like the chin, commonly around nine to eighteen months before a top-up is considered. Your own rate is discussed at the consultation.

Why is it priced per syringe?

How much is needed depends on how deep the fold is and whether the cheek above it is being supported as part of the plan. That varies from person to person, so it is estimated at the consultation rather than fixed in advance.

Is it reversible?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme, hyaluronidase, if the correction looks heavy or uneven, returning the area to how it was. That reversibility is reassuring in such an expressive part of the face and a reason to prefer it over any permanent option here.

Can filler fix deep folds if my skin is very loose?

Where the deeper issue is loose, sagging skin rather than a defined fold from volume loss, filler is the wrong tool, packing a fold in that situation can look heavier, not better. That is a skin-tightening or surgical conversation, and an honest assessment will say so.

How much downtime is there?

Light, some swelling and the chance of a small bruise for a few days, with the result refining over about two weeks. Avoiding heavy exercise, heat and a lot of facial movement for a day or so helps it settle. Best to plan around a major event that week.
